CLARISONIC: THE PORE

An augmented reality shareable lens filter for Clarisonic’s Mia Smart Brush.

THE CHALLENGE

Clarisonic, along with media partner Nylon, approached us with a request to create an augmented reality experience to promote their latest Mia Smart Brush. They wanted a lens that could be easily shareable, quick to activate, and without the user needing to download a standalone app.

THE WORK

The first choice was to utilize the newly created augmented reality capabilities allowed by both Snapchat and Facebook. The decision was to make an identical lens for both social media platforms.

Secondly, we began to break down the different phases of what the Mia Smart Brush actually oes. In doing so, we highlighted the key steps that Clarisonic wanted to see happen since we were truncating the experience down to 15 seconds.

The experience was then storyboarded out to simplify and preview the steps.

Once the steps were approved, we began to create the assets needed for the experience. This began with modeling a 3D Mia Smart Brush from scratch.

After the brush, we created the facial mapping needed for the skin animation. Working withSnap and Facebook’s Augmented Reality studios, we replicated the experience to be virtually identical.

Upon the user opening their mouth, the brush begins to scrub away skin damage, then applies computer-generated makeup, and finally finishes with a skin smoothing effect.

The animation is not only fun but also tutorial based, showing the user the correct method toapply the real brush, and the phases of the brush working.

THE RESULTS

Nylon Media debuted the filters across Snapchat and Facebook, as both shareable links, making them instantly available to hundreds of millions of users.

The filters were also included as part of The Pore marketing campaign which promoted and introduced the Mia Smart Brush. This included a live event where patrons were given links to activate the experience at the party.

The lens was shared and experienced by tens of thousands of users across both social media platforms. It was one of the first augmented reality experiences to utilize both social media platforms, and be both fun and tutorial based for a real beauty product.
